A Far Out 60s Party
By Gail Leino

Base a 60s theme party on things like the British invasion had begun all over the world, and nothing was hotter than the British Boy Band, the Beatles, that had mums all over the world shaking their heads. So, decorate with peace signs and psychedelic colors and have a 60s theme party!

Flowered pants, long hair with bandanas or headbands, peace signs on chains around necks, love beads, and granny glasses (often with colored lenses) help to round out the period look here. Vests with fringes, sandals, leather purses with mile long leather fringe, and rock music blasting in the form of The Doors, The Grateful Dead, or the Rolling Stones really set the stage for your 60s theme party.

Use candles, colored bulbs, lava lamps or Moonbeam lamps to provide psychedelic lighting. Tie dye, bright posters, Beaded curtains, peace symbols and smiley faces set the mood. Clear out a space for 60s theme dances such as The Jerk, The Pony, and The Mashed Potato. Have someone there to do face painting. It should be simple, so most anyone can do it. Peace symbols on cheeks, simple flowers, or smiley faces will do nicely!

Bake round sugar cookies and paint yellow smiley faces or peace signs onto them. Serve pastry wrapped miniature sausages (called pigs in a blanket) with Dr. Pepper, Coke, or period alcoholic beverages such as The Emma Peel, which is a combination of cherry brandy, pineapple juice and dry sparkling wine.

Top this all off with costume contests, dance contests, trivia games, and a perfect guessing game, where each person present brings a photo of themselves in the 60s and all the photos are arranged at a central location, so that everyone gets a chance to vote on which photo belongs to which person, and you are sure to have a successful 60s theme party!
