The Peace Symbol
By Troy Tun

One of the most universally known and used symbol in the world is the one that represents 'peace'. Thought up in 1958, the dove and olive branch peace symbol can now be seen literally every where - on t-shirts, pants, cars, walls, and of course, on the jewelry people wear. The symbols has been used by International Organizations, civil right movements, politicians, activists, rock groups, and anyone who has something to do with 'peace'.

The present peace symbol was actually designed by a British designer for a committee against nuclear war and was later adopted by nuclear disarmament and anti war movements. The symbol crossed the Atlantic and reaching the United States where it was first used in civil right movements then in the anti-war movements during the time of the Vietnam War. It slowly received broader popularity, especially among the youth of those days. It was also a timely symbol at an era where peace is one of the things most sought for by people all over the world. It is also universal in the sense that it actually doesn't really contain symbols of a particular religious group and the desire for peace is something inherent in people all over the world, irrespective of race or religion.

The symbol of peace does seem to have reached everywhere. Peace buttons were sold by millions. And it also became a hit in the fashion and jewelry industry. Wearing jeans with peace signs and chain necklaces with a peace pendant became very fashionable. Many famous jewelers started coming up with all sorts of jewelry pieces with piece designs made of precious metals like gold and sterling silver.

In a world where nations have thousands of nuclear warheads aiming at each other and where many have gone through frightening experiences of terrorism, the peace symbol, whether it be painted on a wall, patched on someone's blue jeans, or hanging on the ear of a little girl, may serve as a message as to what is really needed if mankind is to survive.
